El Matto di mare est vaguement traduit par 'tzeezotje', d'après le nom du Bistro sur la place.
La sculpture a été réalisée par l'artiste Dirk Michiels et représente trois morues.
Lorsque les pêcheurs attrapaient une grosse morue, ils l'appelaient un « zwien » (un cochon). Le poisson était vendu sur cette place et c'est pourquoi on l'appelait la « zwieneplein » (place du cochon).
C'est le propriétaire de 'tzeezotje', qui est un bon ami de Dirk Michiels, qui a eu l'idée d'organiser un festival de pêche de trois jours sur la place. En souvenir impérissable, il a été décidé d'installer une œuvre d'art sur la place.
