Aigle est une ville du canton de Vaud située dans le district d'Aigle, dont elle est le chef-lieu. Grâce à sa position de carrefour entre plaine et montagne, elle est au cœur d'un maillage ferroviaire et routier[réf. nécessaire].
Aigle renvoie au nom masculin Agil, attesté aussi dans les documents médiévaux sous la forme romanisée Agilius.
Il s'agit d'une francisation du nom de personne germanique Aigel, Eigel. Les noms germaniques ont été adoptés par la population romane dès le Ve siècle; le toponyme Aigle a donc pu être formée dès les VIe et VIIe siècles.
