L’étymologie du mot Satigny provient certainement du gallo-romain, en référence au nom de propriétaires ou de notables romains locaux.
Au Xe siècle, Satigny possède un ensemble de couvents dépendants de l'abbaye bénédictine Saint-Martin d'Ainay à Lyon. En 1134 cet ensemble religieux passe sous l'égide du chapitre cathédral de Saint-Pierre à Genève.
