Kohlfurth est un quartier résidentiel du quartier de Cronenberg à Wuppertal, à la frontière avec Solingen, formé par la rivière Wupper. De l’autre côté de la Wupper se trouve un village du même nom dans le district de Solingen à Solingen-Mitte.
Il existe deux interprétations de l’origine étymologique du nom. La première dit que le nom vient d’un gué à charbon, c’est-à-dire d’un gué à travers la Wupper, sur lequel étaient effectués les transports de charbon de la Ruhr à Solingen. Le plus probable est la dérivation d’un nom de ferme d’après le Külfbach, qui se jette dans le Wupper près de Kohlfurth. Ainsi, en 1471, Hof devient « in der Kolve » ; 1598 Kulfert ; 1656 Kullff ; 1659 Kolfert ; 1690 Kolffurt noté. Kolf, Kolve ou Külf signifie point d’eau.
