L'écluse de la Weser à Brême-Hastedt régule le niveau d'eau de la Mittelweser au kilomètre 362 de la Weser. L'écluse de Brême, construite en 1911, a été remplacée entre 1989 et 1993 par une toute nouvelle, mise en service le 10 juin 1993. Elle se situe à environ 180 mètres en aval de l'ancienne écluse.
La correction de la Unterweser par Ludwig Franzius visait à permettre à la Unterweser de se nettoyer elle-même des sédiments par l'accélération des courants de marée, afin de fournir un chenal profond pour la navigation maritime avec un minimum d'efforts. La limite des marées a migré vers l'amont. Cela a également étendu l'érosion du fond des eaux vers la Mittelweser. Brême a été contraint d'interrompre cette évolution.
