Le lac artificiel a été construit dans les années 1980 comme réservoir d'eau de refroidissement pour la centrale nucléaire d'Emsland, située à douze kilomètres, sur l'ancien domaine forestier d'État de Lingen "Biener Sand" et "Geester Sand". Il mesure environ deux kilomètres de long et, à son point le plus large, 1,3 km de large. Il se trouve le long de la B 70 et est situé 15 mètres au-dessus du terrain environnant. Selon les informations fournies par RWE, la superficie aquatique est de 230 hectares. Le lac n'a pas d'affluents naturels à part les précipitations et les eaux souterraines. Son eau est prélevée dans l'Ems via le canal Dortmund-Ems et est restituée si nécessaire. La digue circulaire est un barrage constitué de masses de terre.
