Il lago artificiale è stato costruito negli anni '80 come bacino di raffreddamento per la centrale nucleare di Emsland, situata a dodici chilometri di distanza, nel vecchio bosco statale di Lingen "Biener Sand" e "Geester Sand". È lungo circa due chilometri e nel punto più largo misura 1,3 km. Si trova lungo la B 70 ed è situato 15 metri sopra il terreno circostante. Secondo i dati forniti da RWE, la superficie dell'acqua è di 230 ettari. Il lago non ha affluenti naturali oltre alle precipitazioni e alle acque sotterranee. La sua acqua viene prelevata dall'Ems tramite il canale Dortmund-Ems e restituita se necessario. L'argine circolare è una diga realizzata con materiali di riempimento.
