El lago artificial fue construido en la década de 1980 como un embalse de agua de refrigeración para la central nuclear de Emsland, situada a doce kilómetros de distancia, en el antiguo bosque estatal de Lingen "Biener Sand" y "Geester Sand". Tiene aproximadamente dos kilómetros de longitud y en su parte más ancha mide 1,3 km de ancho. Se encuentra en la carretera B 70 y está 15 metros por encima del terreno circundante. Según datos de RWE, la superficie del agua es de 230 hectáreas. El lago no tiene afluentes naturales, aparte de las precipitaciones y el agua subterránea. Su agua se toma del Ems a través del canal Dortmund-Ems y se devuelve cuando es necesario. El dique anular es una presa de tierra.
