La gare d'Alsfeld est une gare de passage aux kilomètres de ligne 60,3 de la Vogelsbergbahn et 0,0 de la ligne de chemin de fer Niederaula–Alsfeld, fermée en 1988. Le bâtiment de la gare, construit en 1914/15 au 14, rue de la gare, est un monument architectural protégé.
En 1868, la Seconde Chambre du Grand-Duché de Hesse décida de construire le « Chemin de fer d'Oberhessen » de Gießen à Alsfeld en passant par Fulda. L'inauguration officielle de la gare a eu lieu avec l'ouverture du tronçon Grünberg–Alsfeld le 29 juillet 1870. Jusqu'au 30 octobre de la même année, la gare était le terminus des trains en provenance de Gießen, lorsque le prochain tronçon vers Lauterbach a été ouvert. Le 31 juillet 1871, la Vogelsbergbahn était achevée, permettant ainsi d'atteindre sans changement les centres urbains Gießen et Fulda par le train.
