Le barrage d'Ennepetal est situé dans la zone sud-ouest de la ville de Breckerfeld dans le district d'Ennepe-Ruhr, à environ cinq kilomètres au nord-est de Radevormwald et à sept kilomètres à l'ouest de Schalksmühle. Il a été construit entre 1902 et 1904 et a une surface d'eau maximale de 103 hectares avec un volume de rétention de 12,6 millions de mètres cubes. Le barrage, appartenant à la Ruhrverband, sert principalement à la production d'eau potable, mais aussi à l'augmentation de la hauteur d'eau de la Ruhr et à la production d'électricité.
