La diga di Ennepetal si trova nella parte sud-ovest della città di Breckerfeld nel distretto di Ennepe-Ruhr, circa cinque chilometri a nord-est di Radevormwald e sette chilometri a ovest di Schalksmühle. È stata costruita tra il 1902 e il 1904 e ha una superficie d'acqua massima di 103 ettari con una capacità di 12,6 milioni di metri cubi. La diga, di proprietà del Ruhrverband, viene utilizzata principalmente per la produzione di acqua potabile, ma anche per l'aumento della portata minima del fiume Ruhr e per la produzione di energia elettrica.
