Au milieu d'une zone de protection du paysage se trouve, sur l'Ems, l'ancienne abbaye des chevaliers de la Croix de Bentlage. Fondée en 1437, l'abbaye a été transformée en résidence aristocratique à partir de 1803 et appartient aujourd'hui à la ville de Rheine. Maintenant, le complexe classé est, après une restauration soignée, un centre culturel, un musée, un refuge dans la nature et une destination prisée pour les visiteurs d'ici et d'ailleurs.
