Le couvent franciscain de la Mère douloureuse à Attendorn a été fondé au 17ème siècle par des franciscains observants. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le complexe de bâtiments situé à l'emplacement actuel du couvent a été détruit par une explosion.
Le 5 septembre 1636, l'archevêque de Cologne Ferdinand de Bavière a accordé aux franciscains de la province religieuse thuringienne rétablie en 1633 après la Réforme la permission de fonder une annexe à Attendorn. Deux ans plus tard, le conseil municipal a accepté cela, tout en soulignant que les Pères devaient enseigner la jeunesse dans les « arts libéraux » et dans la doctrine catholique. Pour cela, les franciscains ont maintenant loué une maison dans la ville et y ont également aménagé une chapelle.
