Het Franziskaner-klooster van de Pijnlijke Moeder in Attendorn werd in de 17e eeuw opgericht door Franciscanen-Observaren. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd het gebouwencomplex op de huidige kloosterplaats door een explosie vernietigd.
Op 5 september 1636 verleende de aartsbisschop van Keulen, Ferdinand van Beieren, aan de Franciscaanse orde van de in 1633 na de Reformatie heropgerichte Thüringse ordeprovincie de vergunning om in Attendorn een vestiging te stichten. Twee jaar later stemde de gemeenteraad hiermee in, maar benadrukte tegelijkertijd dat de paters de jeugd in de "vrije kunsten" en in de katholieke leer moesten onderwijzen. Hiervoor huurden de Franciscanen nu een huis in de stad en richtten daar bovendien een kapel in.
