Petkum est le quartier le plus oriental d'Emden en Ostfriesland. Autrefois rattaché au district de Leer, Petkum a été intégré à Emden en 1972. Au 31 décembre 2010, 1043 habitants étaient enregistrés.
Le village a célébré ses 1200 ans d'existence en 2006. Comme d'habitude en Ostfriesland, les premiers habitants se sont installés sur des terps. Étant donné qu'à l'époque, un cours d'eau se jetait déjà dans l'Ems, on suppose que Petkum était déjà tôt impliqué dans le commerce maritime émanant d'Ostfriesland.
