Petkum is the easternmost district of Emden in East Frisia. The area, which previously belonged to the district of Leer, was incorporated into Emden in 1972. As of December 31, 2010, there were 1,043 registered residents.
The place celebrated its 1,200th anniversary in 2006. As is customary in East Frisia, the first inhabitants settled on mounds. Since a waterway already flowed into the Ems at that time, it is assumed that Petkum was already early involved in the maritime trade originating from East Frisia.
