Les puissants de Blomberg étaient les nobles de Lippe et les comtes de Schwalenberg et de Sternberg. On suppose que les deux ont construit ensemble le château au 13ème siècle, qui servait d'abord de forteresse. Simon I a choisi Blomberg comme résidence et a fait agrandir le château en tant que résidence. Lui et ses successeurs faisaient souvent des allers-retours entre leurs résidences de Blomberg et du château de Brake.
