De machthebbers in Blomberg waren de edelen van Lippe en de graven van Schwalenberg en Sternberg. Het wordt vermoed dat beiden samen het kasteel in de 13e eeuw hebben opgericht, dat aanvankelijk alleen als vesting diende. Simon I. koos Blomberg als woonplaats en liet het kasteel uitbreiden als residentie. Hij en zijn opvolgers wisselden vaak tussen hun woonplaatsen Blomberg en kasteel Brake.
