Le Fehmarnsund est le bras de mer de la mer Baltique entre la baie de Kiel et la baie de Mecklembourg, qui sépare l'île de Fehmarn du continent. Jusqu'en 1963, il était traversé par un ferry ferroviaire avec transport de voitures entre le ferry de Großenbrode et le lieu de Fehmarnsund, jusqu'à ce que le pont de Fehmarnsund soit construit dans le cadre de l'achèvement de la ligne d'oiseaux migrateurs. Les lieux situés sur le Fehmarnsund sont Burg sur Fehmarn, Großenbrode, Heiligenhafen et l'ancien point d'embarquement mentionné, Fehmarnsund.
Au début du XIIIe siècle, il existait déjà une liaison par ferry qui reliait l'île de Fehmarn au continent.
