Il Fehmarnsund è il braccio di mare del Baltico tra la baia di Kiel e la baia di Mecklemburgo, che separa l'isola di Fehmarn dalla terraferma. Fino al 1963 era attraversato da un traghetto ferroviario con trasporto auto tra il traghetto di Großenbrode e il comune di Fehmarnsund, fino a quando, con il completamento della linea Vogelflug, fu costruito il ponte Fehmarnsund. I luoghi sul Fehmarnsund includono Burg auf Fehmarn, Großenbrode, Heiligenhafen e l'ex molo traghetto chiamato Fehmarnsund.
Nel Fehmarnsund esisteva già all'inizio del XIII secolo un collegamento traghetto che collegava l'isola di Fehmarn con la terraferma.
