En 1903, la verrerie Peill und Sohn a été fondée à Düren. Leopold Peill, le propriétaire de l’époque, était un mécène de la ville de Düren. Par exemple, il fit don de 25 000 marks pour l’appareil de radiologie de l’hôpital municipal, construit en 1909. En 1947, les verreries de l’usine des frères Putzler à Penzig en Haute-Lusace, fondée en 1869, et Peill und Sohn à Düren fusionnent pour former Peill & Putzler Glashüttenwerke GmbH. L’entreprise Putzler s’appuie notamment sur de nombreuses années d’expérience en tant que fournisseur de verre pour lanternes à kérosène. En raison de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la production a été concentrée à Düren sur un site de 6,9 hectares à côté de l’ancienne usine sucrière de Düren dans le nord de la ville.
