Il est situé dans le centre-ville d'Ahlene, en face de l'église Marienkirche, sur la place Marienplatz, l'ancien marché aux poules. Le musée ouvert en 1984 dans la maison des orfèvres est l'un des rares musées au monde à présenter des expositions sur les religions hindoue, bouddhiste, juive, chrétienne et islamique, ainsi que des techniques historiques de mesure du temps. Il a été créé à partir du Studio 18 fondé en 1964 par le maître orfèvre Werner Fischer.
