Het bevindt zich in het centrum van Ahlen, tegenover de Marienkerk, op het Marienplatz, de voormalige kippenmarkt. Het in 1984 geopende museum in het goudsmederijhuis behoort tot de weinige musea ter wereld die artefacten van de hindoeïstische, boeddhistische, joodse, christelijke en islamitische religie tonen, evenals historische tijdmeetapparatuur. Het is voortgekomen uit het in 1964 door de goudsmidmeister Werner Fischer opgerichte Studio 18.
