Au château du "Tollen Bombergs", un baron extravagant connu en Westphalie au 19ème siècle, un foyer étudiant de l'Université de Münster y était installé en 1945, puis le professeur Konrad Lorenz, célèbre pour ses recherches sur les oies cendrées, y dirigea une succursale de la Société Max Planck.
En 1958, le conseiller scolaire Edmund Ballhaus y établit un internat pour garçons et filles associé à un collège et plus tard à un lycée de formation.
En 1968, le lycée reçut la reconnaissance d'État. En 1971, une "école secondaire générale" supplémentaire fut mise en place. Les deux lycées se développèrent de manière exceptionnelle.
