I slottet "Tolle Bombergs", en kendt ekscentrisk baron i Westfalen i det 19. århundrede, blev der i 1945 først indrettet et kvindernes kollegium fra universitetet i Münster, senere ledede den berømte professor Konrad Lorenz, kendt for sin forskning i grågæs, her en filial af Max-Planck-Selskabet.
I 1958 etablerede skoleinspektøren Edmund Ballhaus der en kostskole for drenge og piger sammen med en realskole og senere med et gymnasium for videregående uddannelse.
I 1968 fik gymnasiet statslig anerkendelse. I 1971 fulgte oprettelsen af et ekstra "grundlæggende gymnasium". De to gymnasier udviklede sig fremragende.
