Im Schloss des "Tollen Bombergs", eines in Westfalen im 19. Jh. bekannten extravaganten Barons, war 1945 zunächst ein Studentinnenwohnheim der Universität Münster untergebracht, später leitete der für seine Forschung mit Graugänsen berühmte Prof. Konrad Lorenz hier eine Zweigstelle der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft.
Im Jahre 1958 richtete der Schulrat Edmund Ballhaus dort ein Internat für Jungen und Mädchen verbunden mit einer Realschule und später mit einem Aufbaugymnasium ein.
1968 erhielt das Gymnasium die staatliche Anerkennung. 1971 folgte der Aufbau eines zusätzlichen "grundständigen Gymnasiums". Die beiden Gymnasien entwickelten sich hervorragend.
