La écluse de Lüneburg est la construction prévue d'une écluse à sas à côté de l'élévateur à bateau de Lüneburg sur le canal latéral de l'Elbe. Elle doit comporter une chambre de verrouillage d'une longueur d'utilisation de 225 mètres et une largeur de 12,5 mètres. Comme pour l'élévateur, la hauteur de chute sera de 38 mètres.
Lors de la construction du canal latéral de l'Elbe, il a fallu surmonter la différence de hauteur de 61 mètres entre le niveau d'eau du canal Mittelland et le réservoir de l'Elbe en amont de Geesthacht. À cet effet, l'écluse de Uelzen et l'élévateur à bateau de Lüneburg ont été construits en tant qu'ouvrages de descente.
