Francfort-sur-le-Main est une ville d’Allemagne, généralement appelée simplement « Francfort » malgré le risque de confusion avec la ville de Francfort-sur-l'Oder. Située sur la rivière du Main, la ville est avec près de 800 000 habitants la cinquième ville d'Allemagne par sa population et la plus grande du Land de Hesse. Son aire urbaine appelée Rhin-Main – ou Région métropolitaine de Francfort-sur-le-Main – compte plus de 5,5 millions d'habitants , ce qui en fait la dixième aire urbaine d'Europe, la sixième de l'Union européenne et la seconde d'Allemagne après celle de Cologne-Düsseldorf appelée Rhin-Rhur.
