La lignite est formée de plantes aquatiques et marécageuses qui ont vécu il y a environ 15 millions d'années. Les plantes ont d'abord été transformées en tourbe. Les glaciations suivantes ont déposé du sable, de l'argile et de la glace sur la tourbe. La pression de ces couches a progressivement transformé la tourbe en lignite. Pendant la Première et la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il y avait une pénurie de combustible et on a donc extrait de la lignite dans de grandes exploitations à ciel ouvert.
