Portugalete est une ville et une commune de Biscaye dans la communauté autonome du Pays basque en Espagne. Elle est située à l'embouchure du Nervion, en face d'Areeta , à l'entrée du port de Bilbao. Elle fait partie du Grand Bilbao.La ville est peuplée de 47 233 habitants selon les données de l'INE correspondant à l'année 2013. La commune s'étend sur une colline située entre la Ria de Bilbao et le Galindo. La longueur totale est seulement de 3,21 km2 alors que sa densité de population (environ 15 000 hab./km2 est la plus forte densité du Pays basque. Elle est reliée à Areeta par le Pont de Biscaye.
