Semur-en-Auxois a un noyau médiéval, construit sur une falaise de granit rose de plus de demi-encerclée par l'Armançon rivière. La rivière autrefois fournis force motrice pour les tanneries et les usines, mais son débit est maintenant quelque peu réduite par le Pont de Lac, un barrage construit en amont dans le 19ème siècle pour fournir de l'eau pour le Canal de Bourgogne.
