L’île d’Oléron est située dans le golfe de Gascogne, en région Nouvelle-Aquitaine, au large des côtes de la Charente-Maritime dont elle fait partie, à 1,5 km de la pointe Espagnole et à 14,5 km au nord de l'estuaire de la Gironde. Avec les îles de Ré, d'Aix, Madame et Nôle, elle fait partie de l'archipel charentais ; elle est séparée de la presqu'île de Marennes par le coureau d'Oléron, au nord, et de la presqu'île d'Arvert par le pertuis de Maumusson, au sud.
