La paroisse de Saint-Yzans avait été affligée vers 1854 d'une épidémie de typhoïde. Les paroissiens et leur curé demandèrent sa protection à la Vierge Marie qui entendit leurs supplications : l'épidémie cessa. La colonne surmontée d'une statue de la Vierge est l'expression de la reconnaissance à la Sainte Vierge. Elle fut inaugurée en 1858 "au milieu d'une foule immense accourue des contrées voisines et qui n'était pas moins de 3 000 personnes !".
