Il serait aisé de croire que cette dénomination est liée à l’activité du lieu et au nombre de champions que compte la commune de La Bresse, mais en fait, l’origine toponymique de ce lieu provient de « Champiès » qui signifie en patois local « champ plat » : entouré de montagnes, l’endroit où a été construit le stade est l’un des rares espaces planes de la commune.
