Représentant un guerrier blessé soutenu par une Victoire ailée, ce groupe du sculpteur Rodin avait été présenté en 1879 à un concours organisé par le Conseil Général de la Seine pour commémorer la résistance des Parisiens contre les Prussiens en 1870. Considérée comme trop violente pour l'époque la statue n'est pas retenue. En 1916, les Pays-Bas demandèrent l'autorisation d'en faire un tirage en bronze pour l'offrir à la ville de Verdun.
La commande fut achevée en 1920 et installée à Verdun, place de la Roche, Porte Saint Paul puis sur la promenade des frères Boulhaut.
