Marguerite, fille de Gaston VII et épouse de Roger-Bernard de Foix, fonde la bastide en 1292, en réaction à la création des bastides d’Hastingues par les anglais et de Sordes par les Navarrais. Une tour de guet permettait de surveiller troupes ou pillards, et de prévenir par signaux optiques la capitale Orthez via des relais. Gaston Fébus transforme 40 ans plus tard la tour de guet en donjon et lui accole un château fort, détruit en 1523 par Charles Quint. Seul subsiste le donjon carré et massif de 28 m de hauteur ; son rez-de-chaussée est « aveugle », les étages supérieurs étant seuls destinés à être habités. L’un des côtés sert de fronton depuis 1922.
La tour donjon du 14e, chapelle, cloître, parc, jardin, lac, embaradère, réservoir, décor intérieur du Domaine du Château Bijou sont classés Monument Historique
