L'Aquitaine est une ancienne région administrative du Sud-Ouest de la France . Elle comprenait cinq départements : la Dordogne, la Gironde, les Landes, le Lot-et-Garonne et les Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Son chef-lieu, Bordeaux, en était aussi la plus grande ville. Cette région administrative tirait son nom d'une partie de la Gaule, dont les contours ont évolué depuis l'Antiquité pour se fixer au XIIe siècle à l'ensemble du Poitou, du Limousin, de l'Angoumois, de la Saintonge, du Périgord et de la Gascogne regroupés autour de Bordeaux dans le Duché d'Aquitaine. Ses habitants étaient appelés les Aquitains.
