«La nasso del Gral», Trabès dé Sagno morto…" Ces noms anciens, évoquent les tourbières…. La tradition donne à l’étang une origine seigneuriale avec la création d’un peschio ou étang à poissons et rapporte qu’un conflit, au XIIIème siècle, s’éleva entre les seigneurs propriétaires et les vignerons qui, selon une croyance bien ancrée à l’époque, accusaient les étangs du mont Lozère d’attirer orages et grêle sur leur récoltes… En 1882, ces terrains sont achetés par le docteur Barrandon.
Actuellement, l'étang situé en zone Cœur du Parc National des Cévennes est labellisé charte européenne du tourisme durable. Seule une partie du lac est ouverte à la pêche. L’étang se rejoint par une piste en terre de 3km traversant la forêt et partant du village des Laubies.
