Le buste est l'œuvre du beau-frère de Rimbaud et fut inauguré en 1901.
En 1914-1918, il fut détruit pendant la guerre . En 1927, il fut remplacé par un buste d'Alphonse Colle. En 1942-44 : fondu sous le régime de Vichy. En 1954 : remplacé par un buste de Dumont, d'après celui d'Alphonse Colle.
Arthus Rimbaud est l'un des plus grands poètes français et né à Charleville-Mézières.
