L'Axe Vert est né d'une idée originale qui a conduit à transformer une ancienne voie ferrée en chemin toutes randonnées, avec les anciennes gares aménagées en gîtes de séjour. De Guise aux portes d'Hirson, avec un prolongement jusqu'à l'abbaye de Saint-Michel, l'Axe vert accompagne l'Oise, qui descend de Belgique. Dans le paysage serein de cette vallée, ornée ici et là de massifs de peupliers, la rivière abandonne sur ses flancs quelques marais et étangs propices à la pêche comme à l'observation d'oiseaux. Sur près de 40 km, le chemin s'étire, dégagé, balisé d'hôtels et de gîtes, ouvert aussi à d'autres aventures (descentes en canoë-kayak depuis les embarcadères de Guise, d'Etréaupont, d'Autreppes ou d'Hirson, ou à la découverte d'une riche mémoire industrielle autour d'Hirson).
