C'est un magnifique bâtiment construit en 1665, en tant que résidence privée de Sir John Denham. De style palladien, il a ensuite été vendu au comte de Burlington dont il a pris le nom.
Il abrite maintenant la Royal Academy of Arts et est le siège de diverses fondations culturelles, comme la Fondation géologique, l'Astronomique, ou celle des Antiquaires.
En plus de sa importante collection permanente, ce musée organise diverses expositions d'art contemporain et temporaires, qui suscitent toujours un grand intérêt.
