À la demande de William III, George London et Henry Wise ont créé un labyrinthe pour le palais de Hampton Court en 1690. Le même plan du labyrinthe serait utilisé deux cents ans plus tard par le psychologue Willard Small à l'université Clark à Worcester, Massachusetts, États-Unis, pour tester des rats et leur mémoire. La raison pour laquelle Small a repris ce labyrinthe était qu'il avait cherché dans l'Encyclopédie Britannique le mot Labyrinthe et y avait trouvé un plan du labyrinthe. Il l'a transformé en rectangle, tandis que Hampton Court a la forme d'un trapèze.
