La gare a été ouverte en 1902. Donald Mackenzie, ancien chef de gare à la gare de Georgemas Junction, a été nommé premier chef de gare de Dornoch. La gare était située près de la cathédrale de Dornoch.
La gare était le terminus de la Dornoch Light Railway, une ligne secondaire qui a ensuite été intégrée dans le London, Midland and Scottish Railway et la région écossaise des British Railways en 1948.
