Un mémorial de la dernière invasion étrangère de ce pays, érigé en 1897. Après le déclenchement de la guerre entre la Grande-Bretagne et la France en 1793, le général Lazare Hoche décida d'emmener la guerre sur le sol britannique. En 1796, il planifia une invasion à grande échelle de l'Irlande, qui serait soutenue par les Irlandais unis. Une expédition de 15 000 hommes fut organisée et pour empêcher l'envoi de renforts britanniques en Irlande et créer la panique sur le continent, deux expéditions plus petites furent planifiées.
