Ce lieu est lié à une énorme éruption du volcan italien des Campi Flegrei. Cette éruption a eu lieu il y a 40 000 ans et a répandu des cendres sur une grande partie de l'Europe. Ici aussi. Lors d'une excavation dans la grotte, les scientifiques ont trouvé une couche de cette cendre, à 10 m sous la surface actuelle. Ils ont pu dater les particules de téphra des cendres, et les experts ont trouvé des artefacts humains sous cette couche, preuve que l'occupation humaine dans cette grotte remonte à au moins 40 000 ans.
