Deze plaats is gekoppeld aan een enorme uitbarsting van de Italiaanse vulkaan Campi Flegrei . Die uitbarsting vond 40.000 jaar geleden plaats en verspreidde as over een groot deel van Europa. Ook hier. Tijdens een opgraving in de grot vonden wetenschappers een laag van deze as, 10 meter onder het huidige oppervlak. Ze konden de tephra-deeltjes van de as dateren, en de experts vonden menselijke artefacten onder die laag, een bewijs dat de menselijke bewoning in deze grot minstens 40.000 jaar geleden is.
