Lors de l'accident ferroviaire de Herceghalom, le 1er décembre 1916 à 00h24, à la gare de Herceghalom, en Hongrie, un train rapide a percuté un train de voyageurs en manœuvre sur la ligne orientale. 69 personnes ont perdu la vie.
L'empereur François-Joseph, également roi de Hongrie, était décédé le 21 novembre 1916 à Schönbrunn, et ses funérailles ont eu lieu le 30 novembre 1916. De nombreux participants aux obsèques venus de la partie hongroise de l'empire avaient voyagé en train. Ils se trouvaient dans la nuit du 30 novembre au 1er décembre 1916 dans deux trains spéciaux et le train rapide n° 3, qui avait été scindé en deux en raison du fort trafic, en route de Vienne à Budapest. Les trains avaient du retard.
