Piacenza était un lieu de transfert pour le sel de la côte ligurienne.
Les caravanes de Gênes transportaient du sel de Gênes à Piacenza. De là, des barges transportaient le sel par le Po jusqu'à Parme. Le sel était particulièrement utilisé à Parme par les fromagers. Les fabricants de prosciutto utilisaient du sel de Salsomaggiore.
