Le territoire communal est situé sur la côte de la Riviera di Ponente, le long du torrent Caravello. Entre les sommets du territoire rivais se trouve le mont Grange.
Le climat, donc, est méditerranéen avec des températures équivalentes à celles de la voisine Santo Stefano al Mare et de Sanremo : l'habitat de Riva Ligure ne ressent en effet pas les brises froides de la vallée de l'Argentine qui frappent Taggia et la proche station balnéaire d'Arma. Il s'agit sans aucun doute du climat le plus doux présent dans la région de la Ligurie, avec 1050 degrés jour.
