Au bas de la pente du Corso Mazzini se trouve la Basilique de Santa Chiara. Clara, la compagne de François, y est enterrée. Clara a également fondé l'ordre des clarisses. Dans la basilique, plus précisément dans l'une des chapelles, vous pouvez admirer le célèbre crucifix. Selon la légende, celui-ci se serait incliné pour dire à François qu'il devait restaurer l'Église de Dieu.
